‘Gentle movement’ is a fun and interactive two-hour session for older adults to help improve strength, balance and flexibility.

The sessions are made up of specific and direct movement that helps older adults maintain their independence and mobility, allowing them to continue to do daily activities and keep a level of freedom for as long as they choose.

‘Gentle movement’ focusses on two core factors that create a noticeable impact for elderly individuals:
    • Balance
    • Stiffness

The sessions will work to improve these factors by using specific movements to help them achieve improved capacity. Rather than using traditional gym equipment, or exercise, the seniors will use every day, unconventional items to move their bodies, creating a playground for older people!

‘Gentle movement’ sessions are an active, enjoyable, social activity for the seniors to participate in; bringing joy, playfulness, interaction and connection into their daily life. Sessions are accessible for everyone, including team members, to brighten up their work day moving their bodies and seeing the other participants having a joyful moment in their day.

     • Warm up focussed on hands and neck – using basic hand movements focussed on palm and finger touch to help to maintain touch, feel and dexterity. To strengthen and relax the neck muscles, participants will move their neck from side to side and turn. Through these initial movements, the participants will be able to achieve greater movements in their body and increase elasticity.
    • Interactive exercises - stretching the body, arms and neck using enjoyable and fun movements. The sessions use everyday items to disguise gentle stretching as playful activities.
    • Lower body manipulation – using flexion and extension of the participants own body weight and strength to lubricate joints and help maintain stability.
    • Balance exercises – using balance activities to help them have more confidence to do daily activities independently.
    • Support - one-on-one and group support to the participants to ensure that they are safe during the sessions.
