Brockenhurst & Sway Day Care Centre

The Day Centre is an independent self-funding Day Centre run under the auspices of Age Concern Hampshire.

The group, for up to 15 people, who are referred through the local Surgeries, meets every Friday at the Village Hall in Brockenhurst, with various activities, entertainments and outings arranged throughout the year.

The Centre is staffed by a manager, a cook and a team of dedicated volunteers.

What does a typical day look like?

Every day is different, but you can expect it to be like this:

  • A wheelchair-accessible minibus will come and pick you up from your house to take you to our day centre. Most Age UKs offer this optional transport service.
  • Settle into the centre over a cup of tea and a chat
  • Morning activities will begin
  • A freshly-prepared hot lunch will be served by our staff
  • More activities will be organised for after lunch
  • When the day is over, the minibus will drop you back at your house at an agreed time.

The Cinema is in the Forest Hall. The doors open at 7pm and the evening programme begins at 7.30. After a short film or two and a trailer for the next film, there is an interval when you can chat with friends while enjoying a glass of wine, ice creams, coffee, tea, cake etc. before settling down to watch the main film.

Doors open at 7.00pm with a bar and refreshments available.

Based on a true story of companionship in a period of eye opening immense hardship in America. When Tony Lip (Viggo Mortenson), a bouncer from an Italian – American neighbourhood in The Bronx, is hired to drive Dr Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) a world class black pianist, on a concert tour to the Deep South, they must rely on The Green Book to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African – Americans. Confronted by racism and danger as well as unexpected humanity and humour they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on their journey. With a fabulous periodic soundtrack featuring jazz, crooners and artists of the time combined with the classical compositions played by Dr Shirley. Winner of three Oscars – Best Motion Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Ali) and Best Screenplay.
